Abstract:
With development of tourism and human activities, water environmental conditions and coral community distribution become remarkable different between the coral reefs in the north and south zones of Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya, Hainan Island. This study investigates the responsive mechanism and strategies of two species of corals (
Galaxea fascicularis and
Pocillopora verrucosa) to the environmental changes on the north and south zones of Wuzhizhou Island. The results demonstrate that the physiological indexes of two corals are quite different between two zones. The protein content was significantly lower and SOD activity was significantly higher in the north zone than in the south zone, indicating that the antioxidant systems of the two coral populations in the north are under stress and the southern corals are in a better physiological status. The differences are significant for biomass and energy content of
G. fascicularis between the north and the south zones except for the density of zooxanthellae. However, the biomass and energy content of
P. verrucosa show a little difference between the two zones while the densities of zooxanthellae are significantly different. The results suggest that the energy metabolism strategies of the corals in two zones are different under environmental stress. Therefore, the disparities of the developmental and environmental conditions are related closely to the different physiological states between the two corals in the north and the south zones of Wuzhizhou Island.
